DIAPHRAGM TANK THEORY AND OPERATION

The thermal expansion absorber is designed to eliminate the
following problems:

• Lost BTUs and Energy Waste

• Prevents Unnecessary Relief Valve Operation

• Relief Valve Spillage and Messy Floors

The thermal expansion absorber is installed in the supply line between the back flow preventer and the hot water heater. As water temperature rises, expanded hot water enters the bladder. The outer air chamber absorbs the pressure increase, thus keeping the system pressure below the relief valve setting. The pressure in the air chamber forces water back into the system as hot water is being used. When the tank is empty the pressure on the air side will then equal the supply pressure.
